"Light the Torch for the Next Generation"
OCA is a national organization dedicated to advancing the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian American Pacific Islanders in the United Sates. OCA Sacramento hosts an annual “Dragon Boat Festival Celebration,” and OCA is having an essay-writing contest for future leaders like you. OCA Sacramento encourages young people to write creatively, and your writing skills will be recognize during the Dragon Boat Festival Celebration dinner.

When emailing your essay entry, please title the subject "OCA Essay Entry," and pdf format or word only. Once the entry is turned in, the candidates cannot resend a revised entry. 
All winners will be notified by phone at least a week before the event, and will be awarded during the program of the 2015 OCA Sacramento Dragon Boat Festival Celebration and 20th Anniversary Gala on May 14, 2015 | 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm Gala | The Sheraton Grand Hotel | 1230 "J" Street | Sacramento, CA 95814.

NOTE: Winners MUST be present at the Dragon Boat Festival to receive their awards. Otherwise, the award is forfeited
Who can enter the Essay Writing Contest?
Candidates must reside within the Greater Sacramento Metropolitan Area: Sacramento, Yolo, Placer, Yuba, Sutter, El Dorado, and San Joaquin counties. Applicants must meet age requirements between 5 to 18 years of age.

Essay Writing Contest Rules: 
TOPIC: "How does OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates benefit the community? What can you do to help OCA with this effort?"

 For 5 to 8 Years of Age: 
Submit an essay writing of 100 words and a maximum of 125 on the topic.
 For 9 to 12 Years of Age: 
Submit an essay writing of 200 words and a maximum of 225 on the topic.
 For 13 to 15 Years of Age: 
Submit an essay writing of 300 words and a maximum of 325 on the topic.
 For 16 to 18 Years of Age: 
Submit an essay writing of 500 words and maximum of 550 on the topic.
 For 19 to 22 Years of Age:
Submit an essay writing of 1000 words and a maximum of 1100 on the topic.


 All candidates must submit the essay writing in English language (handwritten or type)

 Candidates must write their name, age, and contact number (mailing address, email, and phone number) on the upper right hand corner of your paper. (Info will only be used for the purpose of announcing winners or just verification). Include your parents name for ages 5 to 8 years old. 5th Division open only to full time enrolled college students ages 19 to 22. Parents of the students are encouraged to attend the Dragon Boat Festival Event. 

How will your Essay Writing be judged?

A panel of judges will evaluate the essays as follows:

1. Relevance to the topic = 70%

2. Creativity = 20%

3. Grammar = 10%                                   

(Please note that the judges will evaluate your essay based on your writing, and names will not be concealed to their view).
